- 8th February - After spending months in a coma, Emily O'Leary dies. (Final appearance of the character)
- 22nd February - Alan Gordon is confirmed dead after being found in a concealed quarry after months of being missing.
- 26th April - Marty Murray and Jan Murray remarry.
- 25th May - Final appearance of Max Farnham.
- 31st May - Katie Rogers gives birth to a daughter, Sophie. The father is Nic Howard.
- 3rd July - Debbie Gordon is killed in a car accident.
- 23rd September - Greg Sinnott is fatally shot by a drug trafficker.
- 28th October - Ron Dixon and Bev McLoughlin marry. Rachel Dixon gives birth to her and Mike Dixon's son, Michael.
- 4th November - Tony Murray and Suzie Michaelson are hospitalised after overdosing on crack cocaine. Jack Michaelson is lynched from the window of his own house by three unknown assailants.

- 10th May - At the annual British Soap Awards, Jack McMullen wins the prize for Best Newcomer for his role as Josh McLoughlin, also picking up Best On-Screen Partnership alongside Sarah White who plays his mother Bev McLoughlin.
- 11th June - Channel 4 and The Mersey Television Company jointly announce that Brookside has been axed; the cast and crew having been told the news earlier in the day.
- 4th November - Brookside airs its final episode, twenty-one years and two days after its first in 1982.
- 10th November - Brookside: Unfinished Business is released on VHS and DVD.
